Changing your diet is an important step to staying healthy or losing weight. But it isn’t like you have to do it all once. Some of these can cost a bit more, but make an effort to switch one or two of these per week. Before you know if, your kitchen will be stocked with much healthier alternatives and you can easily create healthy, tasty treats…
Instead of cooking with your run of the mill vegetable oil that’s not good for you at all, why not switch it out? Olive oil, sesame oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil are all good alternatives. They provide vital amino acids and healthy fats. Just don’t overdo it, since they still have calories. Beware of things like coconut oil. Sounds healthy, right? Actually, it is full of saturated fats.
There are several ways you can reduce the amount of mayo you use, depending on what you’re making. In some cases, replacing it with low fat greek yogurt is perfectly doable. In other cases, you could mix half of the may called for with cottage cheese instead.
Sour cream and cream cheese can almost always be replaced with low fat plain yogurt, too!
If you want to take it even further, here’s an amazing way to make your own mayo at home – the healthy way…
4 egg yolks (take these out of the fridge half an hour or so before so they can warm up to room temperature)
1/1 teaspoon of dried yellow mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
2/3 cup of olive oil (see there’s that oil!)
1 tablespoon of lemon juice (fresh is great, but bottled is fine)
2/3 cup of macadamia oil
Whisk your eggs together until it’s nice and smooth (or if you have a blender, put it to use!). Blend in your lemon juice. While whisking light and slow, add in the oil. If you’re using a blender make sure you turn it to low and that you’re not adding the oil too fast. You want to do the olive oil first just a drop or two at a time. Let it blend, then add a little more. You’re done! Store in fridge in an airtight container (I’d only keep it for a week max).
